How to Not buy a fake diamond ring, instead of the REAL thing!

How to prevent buying a fake diamond or get ripped off..

Your hard earned money could easily go towards an inferior diamond, a fake diamond, or to a crook (no diamond!) if you are not informed.  Also, with some of the new diamond facsimiles on the market, even an experienced jeweler may have trouble recognizing which diamond is a fake.

So what does a consumer do before they put down hard earned cash for a diamond?

Buy Diamonds at a Reputable Dealer

By buying at a respected store or a respect online vendor, you will receive a certificate from a diamond grading authority which appraises the diamond and gives it a grading report.  This is invaluable because diamond grading is carried out under independent strict laboratory conditions by a fully qualified and a skilled laboratory diamond grader.  An in-house jewelry store laboratory will not have the experience and lack of bias that an independent grading laboratory has.  The independent grading certificate will inspect the diamond and assess its validity and report on the diamonds’ color, carat, clarity and cut (see our articles on the 4 C’s).  A certified diamond (Buy a certified diamond) is a diamond that has been independently graded after a strict process of grading. Good diamonds may even have several grading reports.  These reports therefore protect both the consumer and the retailer from fraud and will give you an idea as to determine the price of the diamond and its worth.

Diamond Grading and Diamond Grading Reports

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the largest impartial diamond grading authority in the world, and issues a grading report after it examines the diamond and details it specifications.
The American Gem Society (AGS) is another diamond grading authority which

What are Certified Diamonds?

Certified Diamonds are loose diamonds (not pre-set in a ring or other setting) that have been certified by a diamond grading authority under independent strict laboratory conditions.  These independent authorities include the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), the AGS (American Gem Society),

If You Want to Save Money, Buy Diamonds at Smaller Establishments or Online However...

If you are buying at a smaller store, you aren’t paying those big companies for advertising, bureaucracy, etc. so most of your money is going towards the diamond (that is if the seller is honest and fair…its good to check ahead by obtaining a Rappaport, a Price Guide for Diamonds and making sure you get a diamond grading certificate).  However, if the seller is not honest or a crook, you may receive a fake diamond such as a cubic zirconium, moissanite, or another synthetic diamond-like substance.  That is why it is imperative that you see and receive in writing a diamond grading report from a reputable diamond association.  If the small dealer does not have a diamond grading report for the diamond, make sure you get the diamond independently appraised if you would like to buy it.

If you are purchasing a diamond ring or loose diamonds online and you have not seen them and have not had the diamonds independently appraised, make sure that they are accompanied by a diamond grading report provided by an independent lab such as the GIA or the AGS.
